An explosion-proof 5G smartphone with 450 MHz support for use in Zone 1 and 21 hazardous areas, was recently unveiled by i.safe MOBILE.

The company says its IS541.1 model is a world-first, noting that the 450 MHz band offers features such as low frequencies that ensure long range and optimal building penetration. It explains that the mobile network enables highly available, autonomous and blackout-resilient communication for mission-critical applications such as control, monitoring and crisis management in sectors such as energy, water, transport and public administration.

The model supports the 450 MHz frequency band as well as a spectrum of all relevant bands for 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G networks, with approximately 40 commercial networks in operation worldwide in the 450 MHz band.

The smartphone is built on the IS540.1 platform and includes a replaceable 4 400 mAh battery that allows for continuous shift operation, as spare batteries can be charged outside the ATEX danger zone and inserted into the device. The 6-inch full high-definition display with Corning Gorilla glass is designed to withstand the toughest conditions.

Accessories such as push-to-talk (PTT) headsets and remote speaker microphones can be connected by using the 16-pin i.safe MOBILE ISM interface connector. Programmable function keys, including an emergency button, provide direct access to PTT communication and lone worker protection.

The product is designed for use in a range of critical applications, such as the energy sector, mining, and oil and gas industries, transport, retail and agriculture sectors, as well as public safety and government agencies.

i.safe MOBILE notes that it is a member of the 450 MHz Alliance, an international advocacy group for the promotion and further development of networks in the 380 MHz to 512 MHz bands. The Alliance comprises network operators, public authorities, equipment manufacturers and users and aims to promote standardisation, regulation and global market development.
